Quicky Review #31: No Way Out & The Emporer's Soul

Welcome back to another Quicky Review.
A lot of the time I like to read short stories, prequels and free audiobooks that are short and sweet.  But why do a full review on a book that is say... 100 or less pages long.  I do Quicky Reviews for the shorties and children books as well.  Basically, short stories get short reviews.
Here are just a few sentences one short story and one collection of short e-stories from a few months ago.
There are other Quicky Reviews for you to check out too and don't worry there will be more to come.

 Book Description

Includes two free additional short stories.
That's three 'terrorific' short stories for one low price.
No Way out - Mike takes a bet to go inside a haunted house, but will he live long enough to collect?
Also includes:
The Price of Friendship – How much is a best friend worth? Joey finds out the hard way.
Hobgoblin Horror – Jake only volunteered at the retirement home because Shelby works there. So, it's no wonder he's doesn't hear Mr. Fitches' warnings about a local homicidal hobgoblin—too bad for him.
Five Chapter Extended Preview of Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb:
When life gives you lemons, kill zombies—turns out lemon juice neutralizes the undead.
Best friends Nathan & Misty return home to discover the military has destroyed the bridges out of their rural town & everyone's fled—except a small horde of zombies.
Even with the help of the town geek, they'll need more then lemonade-powered Super-Soakers; they'll need the Super Zombie Juice Mega Bomb.

My Thoughts

The first story in this e-book is good but the others are just a waste.  The first one needs to be longer with something else happening at the end to be a stand alone.  Stop after the first story.

 Book Description

When Shai is caught replacing the Moon Scepter with her nearly flawless forgery, she must bargain for her life. An assassin has left the Emperor Ashravan without consciousness, a circumstance concealed only by the death of his wife. If the emperor does not emerge after his hundred-day mourning period, the rule of the Heritage Faction will be forfeit and the empire will fall into chaos.
Shai is given an impossible task: to create—to Forge—a new soul for the emperor in less than one hundred days. But her soul-Forgery is considered an abomination by her captors. She is confined to a tiny, dirty chamber, guarded by a man who hates her, spied upon by politicians, and trapped behind a door sealed in her own blood. Shai's only possible ally is the emperor's most loyal counselor, Gaotona, who struggles to understand her true talent.
Time is running out for Shai. Forging, while deducing the motivations of her captors, she needs a perfect plan to escape...

My Thought

I liked the story idea but since it's book #2.5 I felt like I was trying to jump onto a moving train.   The characters where interesting but I think there were too many characters who did not help the story along.
